Riverside, May 9 — A newborn discovered abandoned outside a Riverside apartment complex on Sunday is in stable condition, and authorities are now searching for the infant’s mother.

The baby boy was found around 2:30 p.m. in a refuse bin enclosure near a dumpster in the 3800 block of Jackson Street, close to Magnolia Avenue, just a block from Sherman Indian High School, the Riverside Police Department reported.

According to Officer Ryan Railsback, passers-by discovered the hours-old baby, still with the umbilical cord attached, lying next to the dumpster. The infant was breathing and crying when found. Paramedics arrived quickly, provided immediate care, and transported the baby to a nearby hospital. He is now in good health and stable condition.

Detectives have determined that the baby was likely abandoned shortly after birth, but they have not yet identified the mother or anyone who may have left the child by the dumpster.

“We are primarily focused on locating the mother to ensure her health and safety and to provide any medical care or support she may need,” Railsback said.

The Riverside Police Department is asking anyone with information to come forward, especially if they have noticed a pregnant woman who may no longer appear pregnant. Detective Jessica Iniguez is leading the investigation and can be reached at 951-353-7121.

Authorities also reminded the public about the California Surrendered Baby Law, which allows parents to safely and legally drop off an infant within 72 hours of birth at any hospital or fire station without facing questions or legal consequences.
