A newborn baby boy was found abandoned next to a dumpster at a Riverside, California, apartment complex on Sunday afternoon. The infant, with his umbilical cord still attached, was discovered crying by residents who alerted police around 2:30 p.m. on Jackson Street.
Officers arrived to find the baby breathing and crying. Paramedics rushed him to a hospital across the street, where he is now in stable condition. Authorities believe he was born just hours before being left.
“Our primary concern is locating the mother to ensure her health and safety,” said a spokesperson from the Riverside Police Department.
Detectives are urging the public to help identify any woman who was recently pregnant and is now without a baby. They also reminded the public of California’s Safely Surrendered Baby Law, which allows parents to legally hand over newborns at hospitals or fire stations within 72 hours of birth without fear of prosecution.
The case has drawn strong reactions online. Some offered to help or adopt the baby, while others called for compassion and understanding toward the mother.
Police continue to investigate and ask anyone with information to come forward.
