If you’ve ever turned to music to lift your mood or calm your nerves, you’re not alone—and science supports the habit. One song in particular, “Weightless” by British ambient band Marconi Union, has been found to significantly reduce stress and anxiety.
In a study by Mindlab International, participants were asked to complete complex puzzles while their stress levels were monitored. When “Weightless” played, anxiety levels dropped by 65%—the most significant reduction among all songs tested.
What makes this song so effective? According to Dr. Steven Allder, a consulting neurologist at Re:Cognition Health, “Weightless” was specifically designed with input from sound therapists to promote relaxation. The song begins at 60 beats per minute and gradually slows to 50, encouraging a phenomenon called entrainment, where the listener’s heart rate and breathing naturally sync to the music’s tempo.
“‘Weightless’ also avoids any sudden changes in tone or rhythm, which helps keep the brain from triggering alertness,” Dr. Allder explained. “Its consistent, soothing sound helps promote calm and reduce mental stimulation.”
If you’re looking to ease stress through music, Dr. Allder recommends slow, instrumental tracks with steady rhythms. These can reduce activity in the brain’s stress centers and activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps lower heart rate and promote relaxation.
However, personal preference matters. Music that feels calming to you is more likely to be effective. Dr. Allder advises avoiding loud, fast-paced genres like heavy metal or electronic dance music when trying to relax, as they can raise your heart rate and increase anxiety.
“Music is safe, accessible, and non-invasive,” he said. “It’s a simple, powerful way to support mental well-being.”
