Bill Gates and Partners Launch R9 Billion Fund to Boost Maternal, Newborn Health in Africa

by daisy

A coalition of philanthropists, led by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, has launched a new R9 billion ($500 million) fund aimed at reducing maternal and newborn deaths in sub-Saharan Africa. The initiative comes as the region faces growing pressure following major health aid cuts by the United States.

The initiative, called the Beginnings Fund, will be rolled out over the next five years. It aims to save over 300,000 lives and improve the quality of care for an estimated 34 million women and newborns, according to global development platform Devex.

Sub-Saharan Africa remains the most dangerous place in the world for women to give birth. The region accounts for roughly 70% of global maternal deaths, despite some recent progress. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a doctor-to-patient ratio of 1:1,000, but many parts of Africa face a ratio closer to 1:10,000.

“This is a critical intervention,” said Rutendo Hwindingwi, a business strategist and founding director of Tribe Africa Advisory. Speaking to broadcaster Stephen Grootes, he stressed the importance of implementation and long-term impact.

“We know the big issue with aid in Africa was always how it was implemented and the long-term results,” said Hwindingwi. “But these funders claim the approach they’re using now is different to what was traditionally used.”

He added that while any help is welcome, sustainability is key. “Hopefully, this investment will help steer the region toward a more robust, self-sufficient healthcare future.”

The fund is expected to support improved access to skilled healthcare workers, essential medical supplies, and life-saving interventions for mothers and babies. It is part of a broader push to address deep inequalities in global health care access.
