A violent altercation was caught on video during Saturday night’s Maui Flow Fest in Kaanapali. The footage shows a security guard surrounded by a group of boys when a sudden brawl breaks out.
The video captures the guard repeatedly punching a teenager in the body and head before slamming him into a rock wall. The teen was later treated for his injuries.
Event Aimed to Provide a Safe Space for Teens
Event organizer Alfy Basurto expressed his deep concern over the incident. “It’s heartbreaking. My heart goes out to this family,” he said. The festival was designed to offer teens a safe and fun night out.
“We had 16 security guards there,” Basurto explained. “My background is in law enforcement. Keeping kids safe was a priority. I never imagined I would have to protect kids from a security guard.”
Mental Health Was a Key Focus
The event also featured mental health resources. Basurto highlighted the urgent need for such support, noting that suicide is the leading cause of death among teenagers in Hawaii. “There are many mental health needs going unaddressed. This event was to gather as many kids as possible and connect them with health and wellness organizations,” he said.
Security Guard Arrested on Scene
A second video shows the security guard pacing and being restrained by another man after the altercation. Authorities arrested the guard at the scene. The injured teen is recovering.
Calls for Greater Support for Youth Mental Health
Basurto acknowledged criticism over the incident but emphasized the broader issue. “Of course, this fight was awful. It was not our intention, and it was out of our control. But we must do more to support our children’s mental health,” he said.
He hopes the incident will not prevent future events aimed at helping teens cope with mental health challenges. Basurto also reminded the community that many are still dealing with the emotional toll of the recent wildfires.
