UK Parents Could Save £300 a Year Under New Baby Formula Pricing Plans

by daisy

Infant formula prices in the UK remain high despite government efforts to support families, with leading brands still charging steep prices. A new report by First Steps Nutrition Trust found the average cost of formula fell by just 50p last year, from £12.49 to £11.99—barely lower than the £11.10 average in 2021.

Some products are priced as high as £18, prompting criticism from Dr. Vicky Sibson, director of First Steps, who said: “Despite being exposed for profit margins of 50–75%, big brands are still charging shamefully high prices.”

Discount retailers like Lidl and Aldi offer alternatives for £6.99, showing that lower-cost, high-quality options are possible.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has proposed measures that could help parents switch to more affordable brands—potentially saving families up to £300 annually.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson emphasized the importance of affordability: “Families should not be paying over the odds to feed their babies. We’re committed to giving every child the best start in life.”

The government is reviewing the CMA’s recommendations in collaboration with devolved administrations.

Additionally, eligible pregnant women and parents with children under four can apply for the Healthy Start scheme, which offers financial aid for purchasing nutritious food and free vitamins. Pregnant teens under 18 qualify automatically, regardless of income.
