The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled 28 beverages so far in 2024, according to The Daily Mail. Most of these recalls were prompted by the discovery of undeclared drugs, harmful chemicals, or bacteria in the products.
Among the recalled drinks is Himalayan Pain Relief Tea, which failed to disclose an anti-inflammatory medication ingredient on its label. Martinelli’s Apple Juice was also recalled due to the presence of arsenic, a toxic metal linked to an increased risk of bladder and skin cancer.
Approximately 1.9 million bottles of Fiji Water, produced by Natural Waters of Viti Limited, were recalled after bacteria and high levels of manganese, a mineral that can cause brain damage in large quantities, were found.
Recently, four drinks from Charles Boggini Company — Pink Lemonade, Yellow Lemonade, Yellow Lemonade X, and Cola Flavoring Base — were recalled for containing food dyes that could increase the risk of cancer. These dyes, Red 40 and Yellow 5, contain benzidine, a carcinogenic substance. The Cola Flavoring Base also contained undeclared sulfites, which can cause allergic reactions, digestive issues, and asthma in people sensitive to sulfites.
Dr. Detwiler, a former FDA and USDA advisor and food safety expert at Northeastern University, explained to The Daily Mail that drinks are sometimes sold before undergoing proper safety checks. “A lot of drinks have been scrutinized recently due to labeling issues and undeclared ingredients,” he said.
The FDA has faced increasing pressure to enforce stricter regulations on food and beverage companies, according to Dr. Detwiler.
