Flint, Mich. (WNEM) – An abandoned house in Flint has been transformed into a sanctuary for single mothers and their newborns just in time for Mother’s Day. Selah’s Red Tent, located on East Street, now offers a supportive space for mothers to rest, recover, and access resources.
Leslie Beemer, a Flint native and doula, restored the historic home to provide postpartum support for single moms. “This place gave me what I didn’t even know I needed,” said Kiara Gouldman, one of the first mothers to stay at the home.
Mothers can stay for three to five days at no cost, receiving guidance on newborn care, recovery, sleep routines, and self-care. Beemer, who bought the property through the Genesee County Land Bank’s VIP Program, felt called to create the space after being inspired by the Holy Spirit.
The home, which had been vacant for 12 years, is now filled with light, calming spaces, and welcoming nurseries. With over half of Genesee County births to single mothers, Beemer hopes Selah’s Red Tent provides much-needed support with dignity and compassion.
The grand opening of Selah’s Red Tent will take place on May 12 from 1 to 3 p.m. at 807 East Street, where the public is invited to tour the home and learn how to support new mothers.
