The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has raised alarm over a growing health crisis caused by counterfeit and repackaged baby diapers in Ghana. According to the agency, dozens of babies have developed infections, skin rashes, and sores after using these fake products.
Speaking on OTEC 102.9 FM’s Nyansapo morning show, Nana Prempeh Ogueabuor Aduhene, the CPA’s Executive Director in charge of Mediation and Arbitration, warned that the situation is worsening as more of these substandard diapers continue to flood the market.
He revealed that many of the fake diapers had been rejected in their countries of origin due to safety concerns but still made their way into Ghana because of weak import regulation enforcement.
“The influx of these fake diapers poses a serious health risk to our children,” he said, blaming unscrupulous importers and lapses in regulatory oversight for the growing threat.
The CPA has already begun seizing counterfeit products in the Greater Accra Region and is planning to expand the crackdown nationwide.
The agency is urging parents and caregivers to be extra cautious when buying baby products and to report any suspicious items to the relevant authorities.
