Children’s Book by Corinn Reinhard Helps Young Readers Understand Divorce and Blended Families

by daisy

Author Corinn Reinhard has turned her childhood experiences into a new children’s book that explores divorce and blended families from a child’s point of view. Titled My Brother Has Two Houses, the book offers comfort and understanding to young readers dealing with similar family situations.

Reinhard began writing the story when she was just 8 years old. At the time, she was trying to understand her brother’s life as he split time between two homes — one with her, their mother, and stepfather, and another with his father. Now, nearly 30 years later, Reinhard has revisited and refined the story as an adult to help children process these complex emotions.

My Brother Has Two Houses tells the story of a young girl who misses her brother when he stays at his father’s house. Written in simple language, the book explains divorce and shared custody in ways that young readers can understand. At its heart, the story celebrates the close bond between siblings, even when family life changes.

“Blended families are common, but they don’t often appear in children’s books,” said Reinhard. “These stories are important because they remind children that love and family can look different for everyone. They also help kids build empathy for families that are not like their own. Most of all, they help children feel seen and comforted during times of change.”

Reinhard believes that parents should be open about these topics with their children. “Kids are very perceptive,” she explained. “Even if they can’t always describe what they’re feeling, they notice emotions, changes in routine, and tension. It’s important to validate their feelings so they learn that emotions are normal and nothing to hide.”

She added that children often need help finding the words to express what they feel. “When my brother left, I noticed how quiet the house became or how some days felt heavier,” Reinhard said. “I couldn’t explain it back then, but I felt it. That’s why I believe in giving kids space to ask questions and have honest, age-appropriate conversations about what’s happening in their lives.”

Although the book was written with children from blended families in mind, Reinhard hopes it will appeal to all young readers. “This story shows that families come in many forms,” she said. “In a complicated world, books like this help children feel understood. They also teach kindness and empathy for others who might have a different story.”

Reinhard will read My Brother Has Two Houses at Paper Boat Bookstore in West Seattle on Saturday, July 19, at 11 a.m.
