Avoiding Damage and Mastering the Right Technique
Washing hair directly without combing first, using extremely hot water, scratching the scalp with nails… Have you been making these common hair – washing mistakes? Many people consider hair – washing a mundane daily task. They think that rinsing with water, applying shampoo, and giving a quick rub is all it takes. However, numerous individuals are distressed to find that their hair falls out more and becomes thinner after washing. In fact, hair – washing is a science. Incorrect methods can easily damage the hair. So, what behaviors harm hair, and how should one wash hair properly? A reporter interviewed Mei Yijie, a dermatologist from Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University.
Mei Yijie pointed out that several common hair – damaging habits demand attention. Washing hair without combing it first is a no – no. Hair is more fragile when wet, and tangled hair is highly prone to breakage. Applying shampoo right after wetting the hair can result in incomplete cleansing or further tangling. Using water that is either too hot or too cold can irritate the scalp and trigger hair loss. Shampoos and conditioners come into direct contact with the scalp, and the chemicals in them can penetrate and clog hair follicles, contributing to hair loss. Scratching the scalp with nails while washing hair is also dangerous.
Nails are sharp and can easily scratch the scalp, leading to bacterial infections or folliculitis, which in turn cause hair loss. Shampoo contains sulfate, an ingredient that, when overused, can dry out the hair and, in severe cases, even cause dandruff. Going to bed with wet hair is another bad habit. When hair is wet, the cuticles open up. Sleeping with damp hair can thin the stratum corneum and make the hair dry. Additionally, going outside immediately after washing hair exposes it to ultraviolet rays, which can cause breakage and split ends. It’s advisable to carry an umbrella or wear a hat when going out after washing hair to shield it from UV rays.
So, how should one wash hair correctly? Mei Yijie shared some tips. Before washing, use a comb to detangle the hair, and set the water temperature to warm. When washing, thoroughly wet the hair and rinse for at least two minutes. This helps remove scalp dirt and promotes shampoo lathering. Then, rub an appropriate amount of shampoo to create foam before applying it to the head. Use your fingertips to gently rub the scalp. Gentle massage can boost blood circulation in the scalp, but avoid using nails to scratch. After shampooing, apply conditioner to protect the hair, but only apply it to the hair ends, keeping it away from the scalp. When rinsing, make sure to wash out all the shampoo and conditioner to prevent residue.
After washing, gently press the hair dry with a towel and then use a hair dryer. First, use hot air to dry the hair until it is about 70% dry, and then switch to cold air to cool it down, which helps close the cuticles. Combing the hair after washing is also important. It keeps the hair tidy and stimulates and massages the scalp, enhancing blood circulation, which benefits both the brain and the hair.
The frequency of hair – washing also plays a crucial role. Washing hair too often or too rarely can lead to hair loss. The scalp has natural protective oils. Frequent washing can damage the scalp barrier, causing dryness and hair loss. On the other hand, not washing for an extended period can disrupt oil secretion and harm the hair. It’s recommended to adjust the hair – washing frequency according to hair type and climate conditions.
