May 23, 2025 — Nearly 100 pounds of smoked andouille sausage sold at Rouses Market locations in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana have been voluntarily recalled due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, according to a recent announcement by Bourgeois Smokehouse.
The recall affects smoked andouille sausage that was produced on May 12 and sold through butcher counters beginning May 13. Because these items were sold by weight and not pre-packaged, they do not carry a USDA mark of inspection, making it harder for consumers to identify them. As a result, anyone who recently purchased smoked andouille sausage from Rouses Market in the affected states is urged not to eat the product.
The possible contamination was discovered during routine testing by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), which returned positive results for Listeria monocytogenes. While no illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported so far, consumers are advised to take caution.
Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Pregnant women are also particularly at risk.
Customers who have purchased the recalled sausage should return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Anyone with health concerns or symptoms related to listeriosis should contact their healthcare provider.
