Oregon Senate Unanimously Passes Bill to Protect Families with Babies from Eviction

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Oregon Senate unanimously approved a bill Tuesday aimed at preventing families with babies from losing their homes.

Senate Bill 690 prohibits eviction for non-payment of rent for families with a baby 12 months old or younger. This protection applies if the family has been approved for rental assistance but has not yet received the funds through Oregon’s Health Related Social Needs program.

The bill also instructs the Oregon Housing and Community Services department to prioritize families with newborns when distributing rent assistance.

Senator Lisa Reynolds (D–Portland) emphasized the importance of the bill, saying, “This is not a Democratic issue or a Republican issue. This is an issue of our shared humanity. In our current housing crisis, we are simply trying to get moms and babies in the lifeboats first.”

The bill now moves to the Oregon House of Representatives for consideration.
