Not long ago, the phrase “The country calls you to lose weight” topped the trending lists. Many netizens commented that they would answer the country’s call and make weight loss a priority. The intense focus on weight underscores the crucial role of national health in social development.
Obesity is linked to over 40 diseases. Currently, more than half of Chinese adults are overweight or obese. Moreover, obesity is threatening the health of children and teenagers. The “Guiding Principles for Weight Management (2024 Edition)” released by the National Health Commission warns that if the overweight and obesity problem isn’t curbed effectively, the rate of overweight and obesity among Chinese adults will surge to 70.5% by 2030. The rate for children will also reach a high of 31.8%. Strengthening weight management and taking preventive health measures deserve everyone’s serious attention and action.
In June 2024, 16 departments, including the National Health Commission, jointly issued the “Implementation Plan for the ‘Weight Management Year’ Campaign”, launching a three – year initiative. Regions across the country have actively responded. Inner Mongolia has integrated weight management into its occupational disease prevention and control system. Zhejiang has organized various mass fitness activities. Guangdong plans to have 80% of its secondary and above comprehensive medical institutions open weight management clinics by the end of 2026. These measures aim to enhance the public’s awareness and skills in weight management and improve the abnormal weight situation among the population.
Effective weight management and achieving universal health require the combined efforts of multiple parties. Functional departments should formulate more comprehensive public health policies, increase investment in sports facility construction, open more sports venues, and guide the development of the healthy food industry. Medical and health institutions should leverage their professional expertise, rationally set up weight management clinics, and offer scientific weight management guidance and intervention to residents.
Schools should effectively implement health education, ensure students have enough daily physical activity time, and optimize the campus diet. As individuals, it’s essential to take charge of one’s own health, establish correct health concepts, avoid extreme weight – loss methods, and manage weight through a balanced diet and scientific exercise.
“The country calls you to lose weight” is not just a slogan but a call to action. When a social atmosphere that values weight management is established, we will be one step closer to the goal of “Healthy China”, and people’s quality of life and happiness will be significantly enhanced.
