ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA (KRON) — Alameda County is launching a groundbreaking three-year, $5.8 million diaper bank program aimed at providing low-income families with monthly access to essential childcare supplies.
Officials say the initiative is one of the largest in the nation and will distribute over 15 million diapers and 37 million baby wipes to address growing health and hygiene needs.
The diaper bank is a collaborative effort between SupplyBank.org, the Alameda County Social Services Agency, and First 5 Alameda County.
Addressing Health and Access Barriers
“Diaper need creates barriers to childcare and employment, and results in approximately 40,000 visits to California hospitals annually, 80 percent of which are to the emergency room,” Alameda County officials noted in a Thursday news release.
The program is intended to alleviate such burdens and improve access to childcare by ensuring basic supplies are available to struggling families.
Distribution Plan
Monthly distributions of diaper kits will be available at more than 50 locations throughout Alameda County. Sites will include:
- Libraries
- School districts
- Health clinics
- Family resource centers
Program Launch
The official launch event is scheduled for Monday, May 19 at the Wilma Chan Highland Hospital Campus.
