The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning about a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to whole cucumbers. So far, 26 cases have been reported across 15 states, including nine hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported.
The affected cucumbers were grown by Bedner Growers Inc. and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Inc. between April 29 and May 19, 2025. People who may have purchased cucumbers during this time are urged to check with retailers or discard the produce as a precaution.
States Reporting Cases
The states with confirmed cases include:
- California
- Colorado
- Kansas
- Illinois
- Ohio
- Michigan
- Pennsylvania
- New York
- Kentucky
- Virginia
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
- Alabama
- Florida
- Tennessee
However, the CDC notes the outbreak could extend beyond these states. The actual number of infected individuals is likely higher since many people recover without medical attention or testing.
Timeline of the Outbreak
The first illness linked to this outbreak was reported on April 2, with additional cases continuing through April 28. The CDC explained that newer cases may not yet be identified, as it typically takes three to four weeks to confirm connections to an outbreak.
Possible Cruise Ship Link
The CDC reported that seven individuals who became sick had been on cruise ships in the week before falling ill. These cruises departed from ports in Florida between March 30 and April 12, and involved five different ships.
Ongoing Investigation
The CDC, along with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state health departments, is continuing its investigation. Officials are working to trace the source of the contamination and prevent further illnesses.
