Bornstein Seafoods Inc., based in Washington state, has recalled approximately 44,550 pounds of cooked and peeled ready-to-eat shrimp due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, according to an announcement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recall applies to Fzn Shrimp Meat sold under the Bornstein Seafoods brand in 1-pound and 5-pound plastic bags. The packaging includes various UPC codes and lot numbers. The product is marketed simply as “Shrimp.”

Listeria monocytogenes is a potentially dangerous bacteria that can cause severe illness, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience flu-like symptoms such as high fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. In pregnant women, infection can lead to miscarriages or stillbirths.

So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled shrimp.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling by Bornstein Seafoods detected the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a shrimp sample taken from a food production environment. The company has halted distribution of the product while it investigates the source of the contamination.

This recall follows several others linked to Listeria concerns. In May, Fresh & Ready Foods LLC recalled ready-to-eat sandwiches and snacks for similar reasons. In April, Blue Ridge Beef recalled Kitten Mix and Puppy Mix due to contamination with Salmonella and Listeria, and in March, New Age International Inc. recalled all lots of its Daily Veggies brand Enoki Mushrooms.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled shrimp should avoid eating it and return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
