Study Links Increased Screen Time in Young Children to Emotional and Behavioral Problems

by daisy

A new study involving over 292,000 children under 10 reveals troubling connections between high screen use and socio-emotional difficulties. Researchers from the American Psychological Association, publishing in Psychological Bulletin, analyzed 117 studies worldwide to explore the impact of screen time on young children.

The research found strong evidence linking excessive screen exposure to anxiety, depression, aggression, and low self-esteem in children. Professor Michael Noetel of Queensland University, lead author, explained that children increasingly use screens for entertainment, schoolwork, and socializing, but higher usage may both contribute to and result from emotional and behavioral issues.

The study also noted gender differences: girls were more prone to developing emotional problems from screen use, while boys often used screen activities like gaming to cope with existing difficulties.

The review covered a wide range of screen activities, including TV, video games, social media, and online learning, with most data from the U.S. but also including Australia, Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Noetel emphasized that simply restricting screen time might not be the best approach. Instead, attention should be given to what children are doing online and why, with a focus on supporting those who show signs of distress.

Health scientist Roberta Vasconcellos from the University of New South Wales called for a balanced approach. She urged parents, educators, and policymakers to understand the complex relationship between screen use and children’s emotional health to promote healthier development in today’s digital environment.
