Austin-based author Russell Daniel has released a heartfelt new children’s book, These Are The Good Old Days, sharing a deeply personal yet universal message. In an interview with Studio 512, Russell revealed that the book’s inspiration comes from his own life, love, and the lasting bond with his late brother, Danny.
These Are The Good Old Days is written for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, as well as the families who read with them. The story explores the power of being present, gently reminding readers that joy, connection, and meaning often come from the ordinary moments that pass too quickly.
Russell shares, “I was inspired by my younger brother and my 94-year-old grandfather, Grandpa Dan. The characters in the book are based on my own family. The idea of ‘these are the good old days’ has echoed in my mind for years but took on new urgency and depth after Danny’s passing in 2020 at age 24, following his battle with mental health.”
Remembering Danny, Russell describes him as “kind, thoughtful, and always putting others first.” Writing this book was a way for him to process both grief and gratitude. He hopes it will help children appreciate life through a lens of mindfulness—not someday, but right now.
Russell explains, “The book is more than a tribute—it’s a love letter to childhood, slowing down, and family. It’s part of a growing collection of my work delivering timeless, universal truths to young readers in ways they can understand and carry with them into adulthood.”
Looking ahead, Russell’s next book will be titled I’m Glad You’re Here, a heartfelt expression of gratitude for the important people in our lives.
