Olivia Munn and John Mulaney Are Considering Whether to Use Their Last Frozen Embryo: ‘Two Is a Lot’

Olivia Munn and John Mulaney are still deciding whether their family is complete.

The actress, 44, and the comedian, 42, are currently busy raising their two young children — son Malcolm, 3, and daughter Méi, 8 months — along with juggling careers and caring for their two dogs.

“Two is a lot,” Munn tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “We’re still talking if we are done growing our family.”

The couple still has the option of having another daughter using their one remaining viable frozen female embryo. Munn underwent IVF and egg retrieval following her April 2023 breast cancer diagnosis, and the couple later welcomed Méi via surrogate in September.

Munn, who initially tested negative for the BRCA gene and had a clear mammogram, was diagnosed after her doctor used the Tyrer-Cuzick risk tool and ordered an MRI that found a spot in her right breast. She later underwent a lymph node dissection, nipple delay procedure, and double mastectomy.

With a narrow window before entering surgical menopause due to a hysterectomy and oophorectomy, Munn underwent IVF using a special cancer protocol. Seven eggs were retrieved, and two embryos were viable and healthy — both girls.

“I told John, ‘I don’t think I’ll be okay unless we get two girl embryos,’” she recalls. “He said, ‘Whatever you need.’” That same day, they got the call confirming they had two healthy female embryos — a moment Munn took as a sign that everything would be okay.

After choosing a surrogate through an agency, Munn bonded deeply with the woman who carried Méi and still stays in touch with her. Despite early fears about whether her daughter would recognize her, those melted away quickly after birth.

“Méi would cry, and I was the only one who could get her to stop,” Munn says. “She’s got this stick-straight hair I had as a baby. I see myself in her so much.”

Now filming season 2 of Your Friends & Neighbors in New York, Munn describes Méi as a joyful baby who adores her big brother. “Anywhere he goes, she lights up. He’s teaching her how to talk. She said ‘dada’ right back to him. I asked if he could teach her ‘mama,’ but he said no,” she laughs.

Reflecting on how far she’s come, Munn adds, “It’s so crazy to think that I’m sitting here with two amazing babies. I’m so happy and grateful. I didn’t know how much strength I had inside me.”
