A fresh tomato recall has been issued across 11 states due to potential salmonella contamination, according to a warning from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Ray & Mascari Inc., based in Indianapolis, is recalling 4-count packs of Vine Ripe Tomatoes packaged in clamshell containers. The affected products carry UPC# 7 96553 20062 1, and the master case label reads either Lot# RM250424 15250B or Lot# RM250427 15250B.
The tomatoes were sold at Gordon Food Service Stores in the following states:
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Kentucky
- Michigan
- Missouri
- Mississippi
- New York
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- Tennessee
- Wisconsin
The recall was triggered after Ray & Mascari was informed by Hanshaw & Capling Farms in Florida, the farm where the tomatoes were grown, about a possible contamination issue.
Consumers are urged not to eat the tomatoes and to discard them immediately. So far, no illnesses have been reported, according to the FDA.
Salmonella symptoms typically appear within 12 to 72 hours after consumption and may include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This comes alongside other recent recalls, including 170,000 bottles of apple juice pulled from shelves due to concerns over toxic mold contamination.
