McALLEN, Texas — Fuentes Farms LLC, based in McAllen, is recalling 71 boxes of fresh cucumbers because they may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recalled cucumbers were distributed in Texas through local vendors at flea markets in the McAllen and Alamo areas. The affected product is labeled with the Fuentes Farms logo and lot number 357. The cucumbers were packed in 40-pound, 1-1/9-bushel boxes featuring a black background and “vegetables” written in red lettering.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly, or people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of infection include fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream, causing severe conditions like arterial infections, endocarditis, or arthritis.
The recall was initiated after routine company sampling detected the presence of Salmonella. Fuentes Farms has halted production and distribution while the FDA and the company investigate the source of the contamination.
So far, no illnesses have been reported. However, Fuentes Farms is urging customers who purchased the cucumbers between May 31 and June 3 from flea markets or identified lot 357 to stop using them immediately. Buyers should either dispose of the cucumbers or return them to the place of purchase.
For questions, customers can contact Fuentes Farms LLC at (956) 340-8653, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., or by email.
